Camp Dickenson

Summer in Virginia is defined less by heat than by humidity, at least in the Piedmont and along the coast, where muggy mornings give way to heavy afternoons and thunderstorms that build late and can clear the water for a while. The mountains sit cooler, particularly after dark, and their rivers run cold enough all summer that swimming is bracing rather than warm. The bay and the ocean are warm and forgiving for long days out, with the caveat that late summer shades into the season when a tropical system can swing up the coast. Woods and marsh alike bring mosquitoes and ticks. The figures below give the shape of it in air temperature; the water, cold in the mountains and warm on the coast, is a matter of where you are.

Virginia has several front doors by air. In the north, Washington Dulles (IAD) is the big international gateway and Reagan National (DCA) sits close in, both handy to the northern mountains and the Shenandoah. Richmond (RIC) is the most central for the state as a whole, and Norfolk (ORF) is the tidewater hub, the natural landing for the bay and coastal camps. Which one you want depends less on the map than on which camp you are heading for.

From there the drive sorts itself by form. The mountain camps sit off the valley and Blue Ridge corridors, where the interstate hands off to narrow state roads winding up the river valleys, so budget real time for the last stretch, longest of all if you have landed at the coast. The bay and marine programs cluster near the tidewater cities, close to Norfolk and reachable from Richmond. The county extension centers are spread across the state, each nearest a different hub. And the city day camps invert the whole question entirely: they sit where families already are, so getting there is a morning drop-off, not a journey. No camp country here is off the road. Any shuttle or pickup is a thing to arrange with the camp itself, never assumed.
