From the South Carolina guide
Summer in South Carolina is hot and humid, and the feel of it changes with the region. The Lowcountry coast is the heaviest, full sun and thick air and near-daily afternoon thunderstorms that build and break late in the day, so camp life leans on water and shade through the hottest hours. The Midlands sit a step milder, and the Upstate mountains a real step cooler, with rivers and higher lakes that stay cold and moving through the season. Swimming on the coast and the central lakes is warm and long; up in the mountains the water is the bracing kind. Biting gnats and mosquitoes are worst at the marsh edge and at dusk, and late in the season the coast keeps an eye on the tropics in a way the hills do not.

Temperature figures are drawn from NOAA/NCEI U.S. Climate Normals. Conditions vary within a state by region, elevation, and distance from the coast, so interior and higher areas generally run cooler than coastal or low-lying ones. Treat these as a general guide, not a forecast for any specific camp.
The right airport depends on which region you are aiming for, because South Carolina spreads its gateways across the state. Charleston International (CHS) is the busiest and the natural gateway to the Lowcountry coast and its marine-science camps. Greenville-Spartanburg International (GSP) sits in the Upstate and is the way in for the Blue Ridge mountain camps. Columbia Metropolitan (CAE) is central, closest to the Midlands lake and civic camps. Myrtle Beach International (MYR) serves the northern beaches but functions as a vacation hub rather than a camp gateway.
From any of these the pattern is the same. An interstate carries the long middle of the trip, the coastal one for the Lowcountry, the central spine running up from the coast through the capital toward the Upstate, and then the last stretch drops onto state and county roads: winding foothill routes into the mountains, back roads out across the sea islands, or a lakeshore lane onto a peninsula. The mountain camps are the longest reach from where most of the state lives; the coastal day camps are often right where families already are. Specific pickups, shuttles, and timing are best confirmed with the camp itself.
