From the Alabama guide
Summer in Alabama runs hot and humid, with warm nights and afternoon thunderstorms that build in the heat and move through on most days. The northeastern plateau around Lookout Mountain runs noticeably cooler and greener, which is part of why the traditional residential camps settled up there. Down at the coast the air is heavy and the Gulf is warm; inland, the reservoir lakes warm through as the season goes on. Shade, water and hydration govern the middle of a camp day, and biting insects shape the evenings. The figures shown here are air temperatures for a central, inland part of the state, so the coast and the higher ground will read differently.

Temperature figures are drawn from NOAA/NCEI U.S. Climate Normals. Conditions vary within a state by region, elevation, and distance from the coast, so interior and higher areas generally run cooler than coastal or low-lying ones. Treat these as a general guide, not a forecast for any specific camp.
The state's main gateway is Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International (BHM), central and the busiest airport in Alabama. Depending on where a camp sits, other airports matter more: Huntsville International (HSV) for the north, Mobile Regional (MOB) for the coast, and, for the Lookout Mountain camps in the far northeast, Chattanooga (CHA) just over the Tennessee line is actually the closest way in.
From there the interstates carry most of the distance. An interstate runs northeast out of Birmingham past Fort Payne toward the mountain, where the last stretch leaves the highway for county roads climbing onto the plateau near the state park. Another forms the long north-to-south spine of the state. And at the bottom, an interstate and a causeway reach out to the barrier island at the coast. Expect that pattern in most places: interstate for the bulk of the trip, then a shift to secondary and county roads at the end. Metro day camps invert the whole question, since they sit in the cities where families already are. Any shuttle or pickup arrangement is a thing to confirm directly with the camp.
