Field Guide
A field guide to what a camp summer looks like in Vermont: the forms it takes, how the landscape and climate shape it, and what it asks of a family.
Field notes
Plan a Vermont camp summer for warm, sometimes humid afternoons and nights cool enough to want a sweatshirt, so layers earn their space in the duffel. Bug season is real, worst as the warm weather comes in and easing after. The lakes and ponds stay cold enough that swimming is usually short and bracing, and afternoon thunderstorms are a normal part of the mountain day. Mornings can start in valley fog, and the light holds long into the evening before the season turns quickly at its close.
camp season (June-August (representative core camp season)) runs highs of 78-82°F (26-28°C) and lows of 57-62°F (14-17°C).
Most families fly into Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport (BTV), up in the northwest of the state beside Lake Champlain and Vermont's main gateway. Because BTV sits at the far northern end, families headed for camps in the south and southeast often use out-of-state hubs instead, among them Manchester in New Hampshire (MHT), Albany in New York (ALB), the Hartford area (BDL), and Boston (BOS). Which one is closer depends entirely on where in the state your camp actually is.
From any of them the pattern holds: interstate for the long haul, then a winding two-lane state road, then, for many hill and farm camps, a final stretch of narrow, often unpaved town road with dust behind the car. Lakeside and northern camps can be a short drive from Burlington; central and southern ones are a good deal farther on. Town, college, waterfront, and ski-mountain day camps invert all of this, since you are driving from where you already are. For wilderness and expedition programs, the road ends at the camp and contact narrows once a trip heads into the mountains. Anything to do with pickups, shuttles, or timing is worth confirming directly with the camp.
The shape of your own summer depends on which Vermont you have chosen. Leave a child for weeks at a long-stay camp down the back roads and you get a genuine absence and a slow information loop, letters and a set contact rhythm and a visiting day in the middle, while the pretty towns you pass through are Vermont's ordinary tourism rather than anything the camp arranges for you. Send a child to a day program in town and there is no waiting to do at all, only the daily rhythm of drop-off and pickup.
Either way, the parent's experience of camp is its own thing, distinct from the child's and worth understanding on its own terms. The [Parent Side Quest](/field-guide/parent-side-quest) is the part of the Field Guide about exactly that.
