From the Kansas guide
Heat is the fact a Kansas camp plans around. Summer days run hot and often humid, with a wide sky, a steady wind off the grass, and little natural shade out on open prairie, so water, hydration, and the cooler ends of the day shape the schedule. Afternoon storms build quickly and can turn severe. Swimming happens in warm inland water, creeks and rivers and reservoirs and pools, and the tallgrass near the creek bottoms brings ticks, chiggers, and mosquitoes. The figures below are air temperatures.
Average at camp time
June
88°high
66°low
July
93°high
70°low
August
91°high
69°low
Temperature figures are drawn from NOAA/NCEI U.S. Climate Normals. Conditions vary within a state by region, elevation, and distance from the coast, so interior and higher areas generally run cooler than coastal or low-lying ones. Treat these as a general guide, not a forecast for any specific camp.
The main way in by air is Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport (ICT), the largest airport in the state, sitting in south-central Kansas. For camps on the eastern and Kansas City side, Kansas City International Airport (MCI) is the practical gateway, physically just over the Missouri line. From either one, the Kansas Turnpike is the spine, running from the Oklahoma border up through Wichita and Emporia and Topeka toward Kansas City and threading straight through the Flint Hills where the large resident camps have their land.
Reaching those overnight camps means leaving the turnpike or a U.S. highway for two-lane roads and then gravel county roads, out into open and thinly settled prairie, so expect the pavement to run out before you arrive. County and western camps add open-country distance of their own. The day and discovery camps invert all of this, sitting inside the cities where families already are. Specific transport, pickup, or shuttle arrangements are best confirmed directly with the camp.
