Massachusetts summer is warm and humid at its peak but genuinely short, and it changes with where you are in the state. The interior hills run cooler than the coast, especially after dark, while the shore is softened by sea breeze and prone to fog. Ocean, bay, and inland pond all stay cold to bracing right through the season, so time in the water is brisk rather than warm. The figures here are air temperatures for a representative coastal station; the hills and the far interior tend to sit cooler than that, and the water is left to the day and the weather.

Most families arrive through Boston Logan International Airport, coded BOS, which sits right at the edge of the city and is the busiest airport in the region. From there the state is a matter of driving. The east-west turnpike is the spine toward the western hills, though the far Berkshires sit a long way out and are in fact closer to airports across the state lines, Albany's ALB in New York and Bradley's BDL up near Hartford, which is worth checking if the hills are where you are headed.

Heading toward Cape Cod means crossing the canal by bridge, and in summer that crossing backs up hard on weekend mornings, so timing matters. Inland camp country trades highway for narrow hill roads at the end. For the day camps of the eastern towns there is really no journey to speak of, since the camp is near where you already are. Whatever the form, transport, drop-off, and pickup are best settled directly with the camp rather than assumed.

The parent's summer in Massachusetts changes shape with the kind of camp. If a child goes west to an overnight camp in the hills, there is real distance to sit with: the drive out, a house that runs quieter for a while, and news that comes in slowly through letters and the odd posted picture. The hill region is a well-worn place to visit, so there is somewhere to go while you wait, though that is ordinary tourism and not a camp-parent world, and it helps to see it plainly. If the camp is on the coast or close to home, the distance mostly disappears, since you are nearby or the child is back each evening, and the day is bracketed by a drop-off and a pickup instead of a goodbye.

Either way, the experience of being the parent while a child is at camp, the waiting, the trust, the strange quiet, the small news, is its own thing, worth understanding on its own terms rather than as a footnote to the child's summer.
