From the South Dakota guide
Two summers live in this state at once. Down on the eastern plain the heat is real and humid and the storms can be sudden and loud, with wind and hail part of the bargain. Up in the Black Hills the air is cooler and the nights can turn cold even in the heart of summer, so a child packs for both a hot afternoon and a chilly cabin. The water stays cold enough that swimming is a quick, bracing thing rather than a lazy one. The figures below are air temperatures from a representative eastern station; the high and western country runs cooler than they suggest.

Temperature figures are drawn from NOAA/NCEI U.S. Climate Normals. Conditions vary within a state by region, elevation, and distance from the coast, so interior and higher areas generally run cooler than coastal or low-lying ones. Treat these as a general guide, not a forecast for any specific camp.
The state keeps an airport at each end. Sioux Falls Regional, also called Joe Foss Field (FSD), serves the eastern half; Rapid City Regional (RAP) is the way in for the Black Hills and the west. The main interstate runs the full width of the state between the two hub cities, another interstate carries the eastern side north and south, and from the Rapid City end a U.S. highway climbs up into the southern hills where the resident camps sit.
After that, distance depends entirely on the kind of camp. A Black Hills camp is a fairly short drive from Rapid City. Many prairie and county camps are near where families already live, so the trip is local rather than a destination. Ranch camps can be genuinely far, hours out where the highway turns to gravel and the last stretch is slow. Programming within reservation communities is usually close to the community it serves. There is no single shuttle to assume; how a child actually gets from the airport to the gate is something to settle directly with the individual camp.
