From the West Virginia guide
Summer in West Virginia is warm and humid by day and noticeably cooler after dark, with the highlands and hollows both giving the heat back at night and elevation taking the edge off. Afternoons and evenings bring mountain thunderstorms; mornings bring fog sitting low in the river bottoms. This is heavily forested country, so biting insects come with the territory, and the rivers run cool and fast off the mountains even in the warmest weeks, which makes swimming and paddling bracing rather than balmy. The figures below are air temperatures only.

Temperature figures are drawn from NOAA/NCEI U.S. Climate Normals. Conditions vary within a state by region, elevation, and distance from the coast, so interior and higher areas generally run cooler than coastal or low-lying ones. Treat these as a general guide, not a forecast for any specific camp.
The state's primary airport is West Virginia International Yeager in Charleston (CRW), with connections through Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, and the Washington, D.C. area. Because of how the mountains sit, families often reach for a hub across a state line instead: the Washington, D.C. airports, Washington Dulles (IAD) among them, are frequently closer for camps in the eastern panhandle and eastern highlands, while Pittsburgh (PIT) and Roanoke (ROA) serve other edges. A small regional field near Beckley (BKW) sits close to the southern river country.
However you arrive, the last part of the trip is the mountain part. From any interstate the route shifts onto climbing back roads up creek valleys and hollows, and the drive stretches out on the grades rather than the distance. The exception runs the other way: the county extension camps are usually close to where families already live, so for many the trip is short and local. Specific pickups or shuttles are a thing to confirm directly with the camp rather than assume.
