Camp Lutherwood Oregon

Oregon holds several climates at once, and a camp lives inside whichever of them it sits in. The valley and Portland run warm and dry by day in high summer with cool nights; the coast stays cold, foggy, and wind-scoured even in July; the Cascade lakes are snowmelt-cold; and the high desert east of the mountains swings from hot, bright days to cold nights. Late summer can carry wildfire smoke. The figures here are air temperatures for a representative valley station, so read the coast as colder and wetter and the eastern desert as hotter and drier than the numbers alone suggest.

Most families arrive through Portland International Airport (PDX), which handles the great majority of the state's air travel. For the high desert around Bend, the regional airport at Redmond, Roberts Field (RDM), is the natural gateway, and for the southern valley there is Eugene's Mahlon Sweet Field (EUG). From Portland, the interstate runs the length of the Willamette Valley toward the southern camp country, a U.S. highway climbs east over the Mount Hood corridor and the Cascade passes toward Central Oregon, and the coast highway follows the shore to the marine programs.

How far you actually travel depends on the form. Valley and city day camps are minutes from where families stay; coast camps are a drive over the Coast Range; Central Oregon means a mountain pass from Portland or a short hop into Redmond. Resident camps sit at the end of secondary and forest roads, where the pavement gives way to gravel and the cell signal thins. Any pickup, shuttle, or drop-off arrangement is best confirmed directly with the camp rather than assumed.
