Camp Story

Plan a Wyoming camp day around a big daily swing and a short season. Afternoons are warm and dry, and nights turn cold, more so the higher the camp sits, so layers matter more than shorts. Snow can hang on the high passes into early summer, and the backcountry stays cold well after the valleys have warmed. Afternoon thunderstorms build quickly over the mountains, wind is close to a constant, and the sun is strong at altitude. Rivers and alpine lakes stay snowmelt-cold, so water time is bracing and brief. The figures here are typical air temperatures for a representative central station; higher-elevation sites, which is where many of the camps sit, run colder still, especially overnight.

The state's commercial gateways are Jackson Hole (JAC) for the Teton, Dubois, and Yellowstone-edge west, Casper (CPR) for the center, and Cheyenne (CYS) for the southeast; the smaller regional fields mostly feed Denver. From Jackson, the road toward the Dubois and Wind River camp country climbs a high pass over the Continental Divide before dropping into ranch valleys. From Casper, the U.S. highways run north toward the Bighorns and west toward the Wind River. From the Colorado line, the interstate runs north into the state's southeast.

The through-line is that almost no camp sits close to its airport. Expect a genuine drive, and a shift from highway to secondary road to gravel ranch lane the nearer you get. For the backcountry forms, the drive ends at a trailhead where the road simply stops and contact closes for the length of a trip. The exception runs the other way: around the resort valleys, many families are already there, so getting to a day camp is a short hop from town. Any pickup or shuttle arrangement is a thing to confirm directly with the camp rather than to assume.
