Camp Yaldi

Humidity sets the terms of a camp day here. Across the Piedmont and the coastal plain the summer air is hot and heavy, and afternoon thunderstorms build fast enough to move activities indoors and then clear off again, so the day tends to run active in the morning and loose through the heat that follows. The north-Georgia mountains are the cool pocket, milder at night and cold in the lake water, and the coast stays warm and breezy with biting insects in the marsh and a tropical-weather watch that sharpens later in the season. The figures below are the measured air temperatures; the water, cold in the mountain lakes and warm along the coast, is left to description rather than a number.

The way in for most of the state is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, ATL, the world's busiest airport and the natural gateway for the metro day camps and the mountain camps to the north. From there the mountain route climbs up out of the metro on the interstate and then onto slower highway into the Blue Ridge foothills, where the wide road narrows to a winding one toward the lakes and the ridges. It is not a long haul, but the last part is mountain road rather than highway, so it pays to leave room for the slow miles.

For the coast and the Golden Isles, Savannah/Hilton Head International, SAV, is the practical gateway; a smaller airport sits closer to the barrier islands but carries little service, so most coastal families come through SAV and run down the coastal corridor. Nothing here is fly-in-only, and the camp country is road-reachable throughout. The metro and coastal day camps invert the question anyway, since they sit where families already are and getting there is just a local drop-off. Any shuttle or pickup arrangement is a thing to confirm with the camp itself.
